Liberating Shatrunjaya hills are the pilgrimage places for one amongst the Indian religions, the Jains. Jains have erected a large number of temples, especially at Palitana where construction has taken 900 years. The entire Shatrunjaya hill is holy and the climb takes an hour or two. In-between this climb no food is allowed by pilgrims who climb. Every Jain aims to make the ascent at least once as part of the voyage to Nirvana. Shatrunjaya is hills located in the city of Palitana. Palitana is a part of Bhavnagar district of Gujarat. They are positioned on the banks of the Shetrunji River at an elevation 164 feet above sea level. The hills were sacred when Rishabha, the first Tirthankara of Jainism, gave his first sermon on the top of the hill.
Lore statuses that the hill is a portion of the famous Girnar ranges. A path along the ridge leads down to the valley of Adipur, a mere distance of the 13-kilometre town of Palitana is at the base of the foothills, nearly 56 kilometres from Bhavanagar district. The topography is rugged while the scenery is drought-affected.
The Bhagwan Adishvar Jain Tirth is set about 6 km from the city of Palitana on the Shatrunjaya Mountain. The Adishvar Jain temple is one of the most ornamented temples devoted to the Jain Community in Palitana. The temple entails of some exclusive marble work done on the roofs and the walls of the temple.
The hills are an ancient tirtha, a pilgrimage complex on both hills and are reached by climbing approximately 3750 stone steps, which are carved on the hill. The climb is 3.5 kilometres from the base and takes roughly two hours. It occurs from the Full Moon Day of Kartik (October–November). Jains accumulate at the foot of the hills to commence the religious journey. Jains pilgrims circumambulate the Shatrunjaya hills casing a distance of 216 kilometres on foot, offering prayers.
